Prince Edward Island Population

Prince Edward Island is the one among the three Maritime Canada provinces. The capital city of the region is Charlottetown. Moreover, the largest city and metro is Charlottetown and Charlottetown metro. Comparing the province population and area, it’s the smallest province in Canada. English is the official language of Prince Edward Island.

History

The Mi’kmaq First Nations is the indigenous people to live in the land of Prince Edward Island and named the area as Epekwitk. But as of now there two different groups of Mi’kmaq lives in this province. The first person to explore this region is the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534. After the settlement, these French people start trading with the indigenous people.

In the middle of the 18th century, the French and English fought a battle at Port-la-Joye. In the start of the fight, the English destroyed the capital, and at the end, French captured back the Prince Edward Island. During the war, Mi’kmaq fought along the side of the French.

The current Prince Edward Island Population is about 154,750 Individuals. The expected province population at the end of 2019 Q2 is 155,318 individuals. Based on the total population rate, Prince Edward Island ranks 10th in Canada. The population density is at the range of 25.25/km2.

The highly populated metro in Prince Edward Island is Charlottetown and Summerside. Furthermore, the familiar ethnic people are Canadian (44.98%), Scottish (38.01%), English (28.74%), Irish (27.87%), French (21.30%), German (4.05%), Dutch (3.10%), Acadian (2.26%), North American Indian (1.77%), and Welsh (1.08%).

Prince Edward Island population contains White community along with other visible minorities. Birth rate, Immigration and migration is the primary reason for rising in the people of the province. The prevailing religious present in the region is Roman Catholic (47.4%), United Church (19.9%), Presbyterian (5.9%), Anglican (4.9%), and Baptist (4.5%). Moreover, 6.5 % of Prince Edward Population follow no religion.

Area

The total area of the Prince Edward Island is 5,660 km2, and the land covers the entire region. This province ranks 13th in Canada based on the whole area and occupy 0.1% of Canada’s territory.

Bordering

The Cape Breton Island borders the west of Prince Edward Island. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick border the northern and eastern part of the province. Northumberland Strait covers the entire southern region of the Prince Edward province.

Language

The official language of Prince Edward Island is English. Moreover, 93% of people speak English as their mother tongue. Few other languages spoken by the people are French (4.00%), Dutch (0.65%), German (0.21%), Spanish (0.16%), Chinese languages (0.14%), Mandarin (0.03%), Cantonese (0.01%), Arabic (0.11%), and Hungarian (0.09%).

Economy

The dominating sector that supports the economy is Tourism, Fishery, and Agriculture. From the total area of the province, 594,000 acres of land has been allotted for the agricultural purpose. The commonly grown crops are potato and soy. The Prince Edward Island ranks third in Canada in the potato production and producing upto 1.3 billion Kgs. Furthermore, the province is exporting to potatoes to various parts of the world.

Some other sectors that are growing since the last decade are Bioscience, IT and Aerospace. The Aerospace is industry alone, giving revenue of about $355 million by international exports. The bioscience industry is creating employment for a few thousand people and give over $150 million.

The fishing industry, along with the shellfish harvesting, oyster fishing, and mussel farming gives an excellent income to the province. Few other popular sectors are the carbonated beverage industry, Beer production and Soft drink. Furthermore, the median family income is about $76,607 per year.

Geography

Prince Edward Island is divided into two urban geographical areas. Also, the province has a natural beauty of reddish beaches, woods, rolling hills, red soil, and beautiful ocean. This province attracting more tourists every year and most visited places are beaches, small islands, green forest and golf courses.

Climatic Conditions

Since the province is an island, the sea profoundly influences the weather. The maximum temperature during the summer will be around 23 °C to 30 °C and moderately warm. The winter will be somewhat cold, and the temperature will reach upto to -3 °C. The Atlantic cold air frequently changes the temperature during the wintertime. The pleasant season in Prince Edward Island is the Autumn, where people spent most of their time near the beach.
