Nova Scotia Population

Nova Scotia is one of the three Maritime Provinces in Canada. The Capital city in Nova Scotia is Halifax. Furthermore, the most extensive metro in the province is Halifax metro. Also, Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada with the total area of about 55,284 km2.

History

The Mi’kmaq is the first nation people who lived in the region of Nova Scotia for many centuries. French was the first explorer to enter Nova Scotia and made the permanent settlements near the Port Royal. Also, the French explorer has made contact with the first nation peoples of the province.

Later, the British fought with the French to capture the Port Royal in the year 1710. Also, the capital of Nova Scotia changed to Halifax in 1749. Most of the permanent French settlements also removed from the province of Nova Scotia.

The boundaries of the province have extended by adding the region of Acadia in 1763. The British and French fought many wars between the 17th and 18th century. During the 19th century, the British build many ships to fight against the United States. Later, the British won the war after many struggles.

A new government was established in the province by the British to ensure the rights of the people. In the 19th century, several changes in the rules were also made for the improvement of people. After the proposal of Canadian Confederation, Nova Scotia came under the control of Canada. Nova Scotia is famous for building sailing ships, and the province is recognized internationally.

The current Nova Scotia population is about 964,693 individuals. The expected number of individuals at the end of 2019 (Q2) is 966,858. The province ranks 7th based on the total population in Canada. Also, it’s the most populous province in Atlantic Canada. The population density of the region is at the range of 17.45/km2.

Most of the community lives in the rural parts of the province. The most populated region within the region is Halifax, Sydney, Truro, and New Glasgow. Furthermore, Immigration is also one reason for an increase in population in this province.

The Nova Scotia people follow the religions of Catholic (32.92%), followed by United Church (12.10%), Anglican (11.05%), Baptist (8.92%), Other Christian (6.13%), Presbyterian (2.60%), Pentecostal (1.06%), and Lutheran (1.05%).

The ethnic groups who live in Nova Scotia are Scottish, followed by English, Dutch, German, French, Aboriginal origin, Irish, Italian, Black Canadians, Scandinavian, and Welsh.

Area

The total area of Nova Scotia is 55,284 km2 in which the land covers about 52,942 km2 and second-smallest province. Water covers the remaining area of 2,342 km2.

Bordering

The Atlantic ocean border the entire regions of Nova Scotia, although it’s connected to North America by Isthmus of Chignecto.

Language

The Official language spoken by the Nova Scotia Population is English. Moreover, 92 % of people have their mother tongue as English. Some other languages commonly spoken are French (3.44%), Arabic (0.66%), Algonquian languages (0.52%), Mi’kmaq (0.51%), German (0.36%), and Chinese (0.30%).

Economy

Nova Scotia has a natural resource-based economy. The province ranks 7th in GDP production in Canada. The fishery is the leading resource that increases the GDP of the region, and most companies depend on it. Other companies present are related to coal mining and steel mills.

The major mining companies mine gypsum and salt for export purpose. Another essential part of the economy is Agriculture, oil, and natural gas industry, which increase the GDP at a lower extent.

Other primary industries are Defence and Film production. The Defence, along with the Aerospace industries, has increased the revenue and jobs for the province. The film production department has produced more than 100 films every year, which boosts the revenue for Nova Scotia.

Geography

After Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada. The Atlantic Ocean covers the entire land region. The most extensive island present in Nova Scotia is Cape Breton Island, and Sable Island is the very smallest island. This province is famous for the shipwrecks and ancient rocky mountains. Many fossils such as the Carboniferous-age fossils, Triassic- and Jurassic fossils were also present within the region.

Climatic Conditions

Since the province is present near the mid of temperate zone the climate will be mostly of continental weather. Both the winter and summer will be very extreme in temperature. Moreover, the water bodies present around the province influence the weather. The maximum temperature in summer is around 25 °C and reaches -12 °C in winter.
