New Brunswick Population

New Brunswick is the only province in Canada with bilingual language, as per the Constitution of Canada. Half of the New Brunswick population live in the urban area of the region. More than 66% of New Brunswick population identify themselves as English speakers and 33% as French speakers. Furthermore, 30% of individuals are bilinguals.

History

Many indigenous people had lived in the region of New Brunswick for many centuries. Most traditional societies are Maliseet, Mi’kmaq, and Passamaquoddy. Also, the first European explorer has made contact with these indigenous people.

The first European to visit the province is the French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1534 and followed by the Samuel de Champlain in 1604. Later, French created their permanent settlement near Saint John.

In the year 1763 New Brunswick became the part of the Nova Scotia colony which was under the British. Later, it was separated from Nova Scotia to form a new province and named after George III, Britain king.

Population

The current New Brunswick population is about 772,238 individuals and one among the Maritime provinces. The expected individuals at the end of 2019 (Q2) are 773,020. Based on the total population, New Brunswick ranks 8th in Canada. Most of the province population live in the rural area. The population density is at the range of 10.46/km2.

The most populated city metropolitan areas are Greater Moncton, Greater Saint John, and Greater Fredericton. The Ethnic origins present are English Canadian (57.78%), French (26.80%), English (22.96%), Irish (18.87%), Scottish (17.73%), German (3.82%), Acadian (3.64%), First Nations (3.31%), Dutch (1.86%), Welsh (1.06%), Italian (0.78%), Métis (0.69%), American (0.55%), and Danish (0.47%).

Since the 19th century, there is a steady rise in the population, starting from 193,800 individuals to 772,238 as of 2018. The main reasons for the increase in population are birth rate and immigration.

More than 83 % of New Brunswick population follow the religion of Christianity. Also, there are other religious followers present in the province, such as Muslim, Jewish, and Hindu. Moreover, 15 % of New Brunswick population does not follow any religion.

Area

The total area of the New Brunswick province is about 72,907 km2 in which the land covers an area of 71,450 km2. Water covers the remaining area of 1,458 km2. Based on the total area, the province ranks 11th in Canada and includes about 0.7 % of the land.

Bordering

Quebec borders the northern side of the New Brunswick. The Atlantic Ocean and the Bay of Fundy border the eastern and southern side of the province. The US state of Maine border the western part of the New Brunswick.

Language

The English and French are the official languages of the New Brunswick and only province in Canada with Bilingual language. Moreover, 33% of people reported speaking both the French and English language. These two languages are equally used in Hospitals, Schools, University, and Media.

The 65.58% of New Brunswick speaks English, and 31.90 % speaks French as their mother tongue. Moreover, Both these languages are always shown in bold. Few other languages spoken are Algonquian languages (0.29%), Mi’kmaq (0.29%), Chinese (0.25%), Mandarin (0.06%), and Cantonese (0.03%).

Economy

The Economy of New Brunswick highly depends on the goods-producing sector and the services-producing industry. Both this sector create three lakh jobs. Furthermore, Irving Group of Companies control a large portion of the province economy. Also, the company invested in Agriculture, Oil, food processing, media, and shipbuilding.

Through Agriculture, the province produces the 1 billion worth export products. The principal crops are potato, and other minor products are apples, maple syrup, cranberries, etc. Livestock sector also produces good revenue for the province.

In fisheries, the dominant products are lobster, crab, salmon, and herring, which yield about $1.6 billion in export. The forestry department creates employment and produces revenue of about $436 million. Other important industries in New Brunswick are the Mining and Tourism which generate sensible income for the province.

Geography

The New Brunswick province has numerous mountain ranges and rivers. Most of the rivers flow into the sea either the side of Bay of Fundy or Gulf of Saint Lawrence. Some list of the rivers present in this province are Restigouche River, Saint John River, St. Croix River, Miramichi River, and the Petitcodiac River.

Most of the New Brunswick region is covered by forest, and common type of trees are white birch, jack pine, black spruce, balsam fir, and poplar. The carnivores present in these forests are black bears, Canada lynx, and bobcat.

Climatic Conditions

Since the New Brunswick present near coastal regions, the province experiences a humid continental climate. Winters would be very cold, reaching upto the temperature of -20 °C. Summer will be hot, and the temperature is around 25 °C.
